FOX THEATRE SIGNS FIVE-YEAR LEASE WITH BROADWAY BY THE BAY
-Redwood City’s live entertainment gem secures long-term contract for the first time ever with Broadway By the Bay to ensure musical performances in upcoming years-
REDWOOD CITY, Calif. (October 3, 2016) – The Fox Theatre in Redwood City announced today a five- year lease with Broadway By the Bay to guarantee another half decade of world-class musicals for Bay Area residents. The new partnership agreement with the Fox Theatre will give Broadway By the Bay the first right of refusal for the months of March, June, July, August and November for the next five years. The month of July was added so Broadway By the Bay could bring back its popular youth summer program. This is the first long-term agreement between the two parties.
"On behalf of the Board of Directors of Broadway By the Bay, we are very excited to announce the signing of a five-year lease with the Fox Theatre to continue presenting musical theatre in Redwood City,” said Jeff Gee, president of the board of directors of Broadway By the Bay. “Since 2011, the Fox Theatre has been home to shows such as Les Miserables, Cats, Evita, Miss Saigon, In the Heights, West Side Story and many more. This new five-year commitment allows us to keep our focus on presenting high-quality productions to the community.”
A lot of planning is required to host Broadway By the Bay at the Fox Theatre. A five-week block is needed to bring Broadway By the Bay to the Fox Theatre for stage build out, rehearsals and three weeks of performances four times a year. This extensive schedule has made it necessary for the Fox Theatre and Broadway By the Bay to work together on a year-to-year basis due to a high volume of advanced lucrative private event bookings every year at the Fox Theatre.
“Broadway By the Bay moved its production to the Fox Theatre in 2011, when the San Mateo Performing Arts Center underwent two years of renovations. The move was meant to be temporary, but after teaming up with my wife, Lori Lochtefeld, co-owner of the Fox and head of marketing, Broadway By the Bay’s individual ticket sales increased by a remarkable 400% and the number of season subscribers began increasing for the first time in over a decade,” said Eric Lochtefeld, owner of the Fox Theatre. “My wife, Lori, really has been the secret sauce behind the success of public shows at the Fox Theatre and once she got her hands on some really great content provided by Broadway By the Bay, a beautiful partnership was born and both parties were really able to shine.”
The Fox Theatre provides Broadway By the Bay with a top live entertainment venue with a thriving, supportive community in a central location in the Bay Area, making it easily accessible for all to attend the musical performances. One of The Fox Theatre’s goals is to keep musicals as an art form in the community and this new partnership with Broadway By the Bay will ensure that with its popular summer camp for kids in July.
“We always love producing shows at the Fox, but its calendar books up quickly because of its popularity,” said Alicia Jeffrey, executive director of Broadway By the Bay. “Due to this, we had to bid our time before we could make a long term offer to make it our permanent home. In addition, we also needed special pricing as a non-profit community theatre company. We feel very fortunate to have the Fox Theatre as our long term home now.”
